For Kenyans who have been arrested, taken into judicial custody, or imprisoned, the Mission may assist by recommending legal counsellors if needed. The Mission also monitors the situation involving the distressed Kenyan and provides updates to the family and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In cases of lost, mutilated/damaged, or expired passports, the Mission can issue a one-way Emergency Travel Document (ETD) upon application.

However, there are certain services that the Kenya Consulate in Arusha does not provide. These include financial assistance for detained or stranded Kenyans, acting contrary to the host country’s laws, paying hotel, hospital bills, fines, bail, or any other incurred expenses, and giving guarantees or making financial commitments. The Mission also does not interfere with legal proceedings or influence local judicial powers to grant release, provide legal advice on behalf of the accused Kenyan citizen, store luggage or valuables, provide travel agency, banking, postal, or money changing services, or negotiate for special treatment, bail, or early release from prison.

It is important to note that punishments for some crimes in the United Republic of Tanzania can be very severe. For example, trafficking of Miraa (Khat) is punishable under the law
